True follies are rare in the Peak but we do have several towers which have never had working lives.
The Earl Grey Tower stands on Stanton Moor. It was built in Victorian times as a viewpoint. You can still go to see it but it is no longer open to climb up inside.
You can still climb the massive Solomon’s Temple on Grin Low, Buxton. It is an easy climb and gives wonderful views over and beyond the town to the open moors.
The round Victoria Tower, in Matlock Bath, stands in the Heights of Abraham Country Park. A dizzying spiral staircase takes you to the top. In view across the valley is Riber Castle. It is nicknamed Smedley’s Folly, though the reason for this is sometimes exaggerated.
