You’ll never believe some of the fabulous stories we could tell you about the Peak. This lump of stone may have had an earlier life, and that rock once contained a live animal. There was the goose which flew to hell and back and the duck which was transformed into a block of wood, not to mention a cat with wings, and our own Loch Ness monster.
It is not just our birds and beasts which are a bit odd. The people in one village got their nickname from a little local difficulty involving a cow, a gate and a saw. We have had skeleton thieves, body snatchers and a beggar king who served up a cannibal feast to the devil. Other village tales tell of a woman who was swallowed up into the ground and a young woman who became a very thin tourist attraction.
Not all of our stories need to be taken with a pinch of salt, especially the one about the salted corpse. Certain love spells, on the other hand, are not guaranteed to work.
