The Old House is no ordinary museum.
There are no faked sounds, the floorboards creak naturally, there is no pseudo atmosphere, and any ghost you might see would be the real thing.
The oldest Tax Collector's house in the Peak, built in the reign of Henry V111, it has eleven beamed rooms to explore with oak, wattle and daub partitions and great open fireplaces.
This is a fascinating folk museum where you can:
See how an early house was built using the materials immediately to hand like cow hair and dung.
Discover a rare Tudor lavatory.
Operate the bellows in the blacksmith's shop and see the fire glow.
Look at the tools, toys, clothing and equipment of years gone by.
See a genuine Victorian millworker's dwelling where the whole family cooked, ate, washed, bathed and relaxed - all in one room.
The Museum is in Cunningham Place, Bakewell, behind the church. There are town centre car parks nearby.
Opening times:
April 1st (Good Friday if earlier) to 31st October: 1.30pm - 4.00 pm daily.
July - September: 11.00 am - 4.00 pm daily
Party bookings, talks and visits can be arranged.
