Thimble Hall, Youlgreave is officially the smallest detached house in the world!
This tiny one-up, one-down cottage has been officially confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest detached house in the world. It measures 10ft 3in (312.5cm) by 12ft 2in (371cm) and is 11ft 10in (361cm) high, with only one door, a ladder instead of a staircase and no bathroom or kitchen.
About 100 years ago, the cottage was home to a family of eight. In more recent times it has been used as a cobbler’s workshop and an antique shop.
When Thimble Hall was put up for auction in 1999, the price guide was £5,000 to £15,000 but, to everyone’s amazement, it sold for £39,500. Bids were made by telephone from Hong Kong, Athens and New York. Worked out at price per square metre, Thimble Hall cost as much as properties in the most expensive areas of London.
The new owner, a Chesterfield ice cream manufacturer, hopes to be able to open Thimble Hall to the public, but it will be a very tight squeeze.
