Ebbing and Flowing Well The Peak has two Ebbing and Flowing wells - springs which were famous for rising and flowing without any set pattern. Although there are more impressive accounts of performances at the Barmoor Clough spring, it is the one at Tideswell, in a private garden on Manchester Road, which is a Wonder of the Peak. People used to believe that these springs ebbed and flowed with the tide but it seems to have had more to do with the weather. Eye-witness reports were far more common after heavy rain than during dry seasons. The action was probably due to the existence of a natural underground reservoir. A natural duct opened out at a lower level, acting like a syphon to suck the water down to form a temporary pond. No ebbing and flowing has been reported at either well for many years.
