Mam Tor, known as the Shivering Mountain, rises on the west side of Castleton. Layers of gritstone and shale are exposed on Mam Tor and there are constant landslips down the side of the hill. These have destroyed the Mam Tor road in modern times.
Legend has it that although the surface constantly crumbles and slides downwards, the shadow of the hill never grows any smaller. For this reason Mam Tor was seen as a Wonder.
Hobbes may also have marvelled at the views from the summit of Mam Tor. This is the Peak’s highest and most impressive Iron Age hillfort, with 6.5 hectares (16 acres) enclosed by an earthen rampart and ditch some 1,100m (1,200 yards) in circumference.
It is a site of great archaeological interest, with evidence of prehistoric circular huts clustered on the summit, visible both in the snow and during dry summers. The hut platforms also show up quite clearly on aerial photographs such as that displayed in Castleton Village Museum.
