Adam Wolley of Matlock (1758-1827) made his living as an attorney but his real ambition in life was to be a historian. He intended to write a history of Derbyshire and spent his life collecting and copying an amazing wealth of historical documents. Sadly he did not live to achieve his dream and his papers, bound up into 53 volumes, were left to the British Museum. The originals are now held in the British Library.
Most of the volumes are a collection of early material of general interest for the history of Derbyshire, including Court Rolls, Rentals, Inventories, Wills Charters and family trees. Their content has been fairly thoroughly described by J. C. Cox.
