Privies
A Tudor lavatory. By kind permission of Bakewell Old House MuseumA privy is also a: bog, boghouse, comfort station, garderobe, holy of holies, jakes, karzy, midden, reading room, shooting gallery, dunny, the john, the ping-pong house, the throne room, the whajucallit, the thunder box, Waterloo - and a lot more which are unprintable.

"There weren't such a thing as toilet paper. You'd tear up a bit of newspaper. In most cases the toilets were out in the back garden - never in anybody's house, never, not even in the posh houses. When I were up at Oddo and they had three servants and the cook and that - even that hadn't got a flush toilet or anything. That was about 1922.

People used to come and empty them ... I can remember when the night-soil men used to come round. They used to come round with a cart and a tanker thing, and they used to empty these buckets into that. A rum job!" [Bert Boam, Winster]
