Have you ever wondered what your street looked like before it was populated by buildings? Do you know when your town or village developed into the shape or size that it is now? How old is your house? And who lived in it before you did? What sort of work was done by past occupants and did they have small or large families? Perhaps some of the descendants of these families still live in the area and they have their own stories to tell.
By asking the right people the right questions and researching the correct type of documents you will be able to build up a picture of what your house was like, say, a hundred years ago when life was very different.
Queen Victoria had died on January 21st 1901, aged 81 years, after a 64-year reign and the Edwardian period was in its infancy. It was a time when children safely sledged down the middle of the road because automobiles had only just been invented and bathrooms were, as yet, only for the very rich!
Read on to find out how I traced the history of my house.
