The Norman way of life was very different from the way things had been and even in the remote parts of the country there was no hiding from the power of the king and his band of nobles.
There was an attempt made to resist the Normans in the north of England in 1069 – 1070. It failed and William made sure it would not happen again by taking a terrible revenge known as the “harrying of the North.” He had its people and animals killed, its farms, crops and buildings destroyed in a wholesale spree of violent destruction.
Once he felt sure of his security as king, William decided that he needed to know a lot more about his new kingdom and so he carried out his Great Survey, now known as the Domesday Book. This survey gives us the first detailed picture of what the Peak was like in early times, almost a thousand years ago.
