Lud's Church
Lud's ChurchIt is said that the sun never shines into Ludís Church. This deep dark chasm was created by a massive landslip above the river Dane. It is at least 200 ft (60m) long and 60 ft (18m) high.

It is a strange and mysterious spot, draped with ferns and mosses. According to tradition, it was a secret meeting place for the Lollards or Wickliffites. Six hundred years ago these people were being persecuted for their religious beliefs.

The chasm may be named after Walter de Ludank, who was captured here after one of these secret meetings.

At one time a wooden statue stood in a high rocky cleft above the chasm. It was known as Lady Lud and was supposedly the figurehead from the ship Swythamley.
