Alport Castles are an impressive natural feature caused by a landslide high up on the eastern side of the Alport River valley.
You can reach them by following a public footpath northwards from the A57 Snake Pass Road as far as Alport Castles farm. Turning east the path crosses the river Alport by a footbridge and then zigzags steeply uphill over increasingly hummocky ground. As you gain height the rocks do look a bit like castles, protecting the valley, but they are really much more impressive from above.
To get the best view, as with all castles, you have to climb to the very top. Looking down, the view from the edge of the high moorland plateau onto the Castles is truly impressive. From here you can see, far below, Alport Castles Farm. This was the childhood home of Hannah Mitchell, one of the Peak’s most effective fighters for women’s rights.
