Every race which settled in the Peak brought their gods with them, leaving us with traces of traditions from head hunting to magical trees.
The Celts practised earth worship and gave sacred powers to rocks, pools and springs and, especially, trees. They were also head-hunters and believed in giants, good and bad. Legends of the giants’ exploits are still alive and well.
A Roman water goddess was worshipped at Buxton and Norse gods gave us place names. What is the meaning of the golden boar on an Anglo-Saxon warrior’s helmet? Was this in honour of another ancient god?
