Stone circles are a type of ceremonial monument which may have had a religious purpose. They were built in the Peak during the late Neolithic and early Bronze Ages, approximately between 2,500-1,500 BC.
Since the 18th century, at least six circles in the Peak have been destroyed, probably so that the stone could be re-used. Almost 20 still survive but it is not possible to visit them all. Nine Stone Close on Harthill Moor stands on private land with no right of access. However it can be seen quite clearly from Robin Hood’s Stride near Birchover. Although there are now only four stones in this circle, they are taller and more imposing than those of many other circles in the Peak.
